Case Against Blackwater Guards Resurrected By Appeals Court

A federal appeals court in Washington said today that a lower court judge was wrong to dismiss the cases against four private security guards accused in the 2007 shooting deaths of 14 Iraqi civilians in downtown Baghdad.
According to The Associated Press, "a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled Friday that [Judge Ricardo] Urbina wrongly interpreted the law" when he ruled that the Justice Department had "mishandled evidence and violated the guards' constitutional rights."
In fact, the appeals court writes (a redacted version of its opinion is online here) that "the district court made a number of systemic errors based on an erroneous legal analysis."
As the Washington Post's Del Quentin Wilber told All Things Considered in 2009, the legal issue was whether the prosecution improperly relied on statements that the guards gave to State Department investigators about the shootings. The statements were given with the understanding that they could not be used against the men.
Today's ruling includes an order to Urbina "that he reconsider whether there was any tainted evidence," the AP says.
The appeals court says the lower court judge erred by not determining whether some of the testimony and evidence was "free of taint" and by not perfomring an "independent-source analysis" of the evidence.

At the time of the killings, the guards were employed by Blackwater Worldwide ? a company now called Xe ? and were working on a contract with the State Department to provide security for diplomats.
The case against a fifth guard has been dropped by the Justice Department.

Airlines, Auto Makers Eyeing Glasses-Free 3D (Exclusive)

Taylor declined to name the airlines and auto manufacturers with whom MasterImage is talking, but he explained that an airline could license the MasterImage technology in order to equip new aircrafts, as well as upgrade airplanes in their existing fleet, with the ability to show 3D entertainment on board without the need for glasses.
He added that there is also interest from luxury car markers, who have an eye toward putting glasses-free 3D screens in the back seats of vehicles. ?Most models of cars will also have Wifi -- that means that car owners will have the ability to download 3D movies and (passengers could) watch them on a trip.?
For distributors, these might be welcome new potential avenues for revenue from 3D movies.
?We weren?t looking at (airlines and car makers) initially,? Taylor admitted. ?We were focusing on smartphones and tablets, but there turned out to be strong interest.?

‘Philosopher’ Zahabi may be the best trainer in the game

What makes Zahabi so good and trusted by elite fighters like? St-Pierre, Kenny Florian and Miguel Torres is that he's also hands on. He's still a fighter at heart. Zahabi, 31, just earned his own black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
"The thing about Firas that makes his such a good coach is because he's always evolving himself. . . . He's not only a great coach, he's a great fighter. I always believed he would have been a great a fighter if he chose that route but he chose the coaching route," says lightweight John Makdessi.
