Dollard will receive the award tonight as part of the annual Colorado Renewable Energy Society conference through Saturday at the Fort Collins Marriott.

?Carol has worked hard to implement the university?s strategic plan to include energy-efficient, cost-saving measures in our facilities as our budget allows,? said Amy Parsons, vice president for Operations who oversees the Department of Facilities Management. ?She is a tireless advocate of clean and renewable energy alternatives and is well deserving of this honor.?

Dollard is often the university?s go-to expert on energy-saving techniques. Since 2008, she has led the university?s participation in the American College & University President?s Climate Commitment, which requires universities to measure greenhouse gas emissions. The inventory also helps members
of the university community understand their impact on the environment, Dollard has said.

She also oversaw the construction of two phases of the 5.3-megawatt solar plant, which is one of the largest at a U.S. university. The project helps the state meet goals for renewable energy while keeping the university?s utility rates stable and affordable during the next 20 years.

Other major green initiatives at Colorado State:

Biomass: A biomass boiler that burns wood chips rather than rely solely on natural gas to provide hot water for the Judson M. Harper Research Complex.

Composting: Housing and Dining Services this spring debuted the university?s first commercial-sized composting project on the Foothills Campus. The Earth Flow composter can accept up to 2,000 pounds of material per day, largely a mix of pulp from the Ram?s Horn and Braiden dining centers and organic materials from the Foothills Campus.

Recycling: Colorado State consistently places in the top 25 in RecycleMania?s Grand Champion competition with a cumulative recycling rate of more than 52 percent of the total waste generated on campus. RecycleMania is a 10-week recycling competition between about 600 colleges and universities across the nation.

Water conservation: The university has practiced water conservation across campus for decades. More recently, researchers with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department are working with 14 rooms in Aspen Hall, a student residence unit, as a test site for graywater research. Water from sinks and showers in the test rooms is collected in the basement, treated/purified, and then used for sub-surface irrigation.

It also caught the attention of the Navy, which made clear that it had a better claim over the name. Last Thursday, Disney gave up.

But just as one bizarre trademark dispute recedes, another one springs up.

Last Wednesday, the New York Stock Exchange threatened to sue the widely read liberal blog Talking Points Memo over TPM?s use of a file photograph of the NYSE trading floor. (Copy of letter here).

TPM ran a story detailing an insider trading investigation against a number of hedge funds in New York. The story contained no accusations against the NYSE; TPM ran the file photo of the trading floor as a way of signaling that this was a business story.

The NYSE claims to have the trademark rights for images of its trading floor, and you have to get permission to use an image. At first blush, that might seem odd. We usually think of trademarks as symbols or words or names that identify products as coming from a particular producer. But trademark is broader than that. It can encompass any kind of symbol that communicates information to consumers about the source of a product or service. And the NYSE claims that the appearance of its trading floor signals ?New York Stock Exchange? to consumers.

That?s pretty dubious. It works only if consumers actually associate the floor?s appearance with the NYSE. Although we haven?t seen data either way, we suspect that when a lot people look at a picture of the NYSE, they may think ?air traffic control center? or ?Best Buy showroom.? Or possibly ?stock exchange? ? which isn?t enough for a trademark, because there are many stock exchanges in the world.

The First Amendment gives the press wide latitude to criticize ? explicitly or implicitly ? important institutions like the NYSE. There was no risk of confusion, or tarnishment ? the Chamber just wanted to get paid. And the law school, rather than fight a frivolous claim, gave in. It used a stock photo of a film reel instead.

Why have any rule at all against ?tarnishing? a trademark? If you think about it for a moment, a trademark tarnishment claim is really just a species of defamation. Defamation law protects personal reputations. Likewise, trademarks are repositories of corporate reputation ? or, in economics argot, of a business?s investment in creating ?goodwill?. So far, so good?reputations are costly, and it makes sense to have a legal rule to protect them, so as to encourage investment in good reputations.

There is still a puzzle here, however. In the U.S., plaintiffs who believe they?ve been defamed have the odds stacked heavily against them ? the Supreme Court has held that the First Amendment strongly protects speech, even when it is harmful to personal reputation. If the background rule is that investment in reputation is subordinated to free speech, then trademark tarnishment claims, which involve speech harmful to corporate reputations, should, if anything, succeed less often ? at least if we still believe that people are more deserving of our solicitude than corporations. But that doesn?t seem to be the case. We?ll leave off with that question hanging.

7. No double standards. If you ?require? someone to meet certain criteria you had better be able to meet that exact requirement to the standard you would hold them.

8. Don?t treat your dates as an interview. Even though you are looking for that special someone they are not there to be judged or rated by you. They are there to meet you, talk to you, get to know you, not be sized up and graded. If you are doing this you need to take a look at your dating priorities.

Men's Health: Tylenol to Prevent Prostate Cancer?

Is a surefire cancer-preventing pill already hanging out in your medicine cabinet? You might think so, if you read recent headlines: An acetaminophen a day will keep prostate cancer away, they say.

But stop for a second before you start a new Tylenol habit. Not only does acetaminophen have risks?like liver damage?the latest findings don?t actually prove its prostate-health benefits.

Study Finds Tylenol Users Have Lower Prostate Cancer Rates

For the new study in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers at the American Cancer Society tracked close to 80,000 men. By the end of the 15-year study, those who?d popped a Tylenol daily for at least five years had about a 40 percent lower risk of prostate cancer.

The report isn?t the first to show a link between the painkiller and reduced cancer risk, but it is the largest, says Julio M. Pow-Sang, M.D., chair of the Department of Genitourinary Oncology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa.

The results make sense in light of current thinking about cancer?s causes, he notes. Doctors suspect chronic inflammation?a steady, low-grade activation of the body?s immune response?contributes to prostate cancer?s development and progression. Since acetaminophen reduces inflammation, it might logically cut cancer risk. (That?s reason foods that fight inflammation are believed to protect against cancer.)

Tylenol for Prostate Cancer? Hold Up

But while the findings provide more evidence for the inflammation hypothesis, they don?t prove that acetaminophen warded off cancer, Dr. Pow-Sang says.

In fact, the study wasn?t even designed to look at cause and effect. It was observational, meaning that researchers asked men whether they took Tylenol, watched to see if they got prostate cancer, and then used statistical calculations to determine the difference in risk.

To prove that acetaminophen cuts cancer risk would take ?a very sophisticated study,? Dr. Pow-Sang says. Researchers would have to assign some men to take acetaminophen and others not to, and then track which men developed cancer.

Until a study like that shows Tylenol?s benefits, men should ?absolutely not? start taking it regularly to protect their prostates, says Matthew Shuford, M.D., a urologist at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. ?The literature is littered with initial studies that a particular vitamin or medicine looks promising, then later turns out not to actually have any effect,? he says.

Take selenium and vitamin E. Observational studies showed these nutrients might reduce prostate cancer risk. However, a large government trial was stopped mid-study in 2004 when the supplements actually seemed to increase cancer risk.

What?s more, though it?s OTC and commonly used, Tylenol has side effects. Earlier this year, the FDA required manufacturers to change doses and packaging in an effort to reduce cases of severe liver injury associated with the drug. It can even kill you at high doses, Dr. Shuford says. Because there is acetaminophen in so many other products, including cold medicine and prescription pain meds like Vicodin and Percocet, you might exceed the daily maximum of 4,000 milligrams without even realizing it.

Protect Your Prostate Now

The hunt for a magic cancer-preventing pill continues: Drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (Proscar or Avodart), which treat enlarged prostate, are also prime candidates. But like Tylenol, more studies are needed before they can be widely recommended, says Dr. Pow-Sang.
