Things are getting hot and heavy in Zynga's newest Facebook game.?That is, if you consider some PG-rated?virtual sex to be hot and heavy.?

Following the success of games like "FarmVille," "CityVille" and "CastleVille," Facebook gaming giant?Zynga this week?launched its latest Ville game which is called simply?"The Ville."

This strategy-based life simulation?game lets players create a personalized avatar, build a home and live out virtual relationships.?And according to Zynga executive producer David Gray who spoke to CNET, the avatars in the game can (gasp!) make whoopee. Yes, whoopee.

Gray told CNET that it works like this:

...when someone is in your house and you begin to interact with them, you can level up by interacting with them in ways that the game sees as romantic. As you climb the experience tree, you eventually unlock the capability to initiate the "happiness home run," or just "whoopee"

Based on some of?the breathy Zynga?sex-related headlines making the Internet rounds this week (the above one included), this virtual sex business?may sound like?risque?stuff.

It is not.

Prudes (or concerned parents) can rest assured, making whoopee is pretty tame stuff. There is, apparently, partial disrobing before floating hearts cover the bedroom. Hide?your eyes! It's FLOATING HEARTS!?

Meanwhile, Zynga's frisky avatars are hardly the first to get it on Facebook style.

It's not an overstatement to say that "The Ville" has taken a whole lot of cues from the long-running, best-selling "Sims" games from?Electronic Arts -- and specifically from the new "Sims Social" game on Facebook. And those randy?Sims characters have been making quite a lot of woo-hoo (not to be confused with whoopee)?on Facebook for months now.

Michelle Obama urges church-goers to vote

First lady Michelle Obama on Thursday urged an audience composed of delegates and leaders from the oldest black religious denomination in the country to get out the vote and fight for their hard-won voting rights.

?And to anyone who says that church is no place to talk about these issues, you tell them there is no place better,? she said at the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church?s conference in Nashville. ?Because ultimately, these are not just political issues; they are moral issues.?

The first lady was the keynote speaker at the AME Church?s General Conference, a gathering of delegates and leaders from around the world held every four years to discuss, debate and pass legislation impacting the denomination?s mission.

Obama delivered a message of social and civil activism, rallying the crowd by speaking about the civil-rights movement and the accomplishment of electing the first black president. She did not address the Supreme Court?s ruling, released shortly before the meeting, that President Obama?s signature healthcare reform legislation is constitutional.

Instead, she spoke of the similarities between living out faith and living out a democracy.

?You see, living out our eternal salvation is not a once-a-week kind of deal,? she said. ?And in a more literal sense, neither is citizenship. Democracy is also an everyday activity. And being an engaged citizen should once again be a daily part of our lives.?

She compared that ?real work of democracy? to the real work of faith.

?It?s kind of like church,? she said. ?Our faith journey isn?t just about showing up on Sunday for a good sermon and good music and a good meal. It?s about what we do Monday through Saturday as well, especially in those quiet moments, when the spotlight?s not on us, and we?re making those daily choices about how to live our lives.?

She went on to describe the ministry of Jesus Christ as ?fighting injustice and speaking truth to power every single day.??

?And our charge is to find Him everywhere, every day by how we live our lives,? she said of Christ.

She urged the church group to be ?informed? of the daily issues, and to show up to vote ?every year in every election.?

?[T]oday, how many folks do we know who act like that right doesn?t even matter?? she asked. ?After so many folks sacrificed so much so that we could make our voices heard, so many of us just can?t be bothered.
?
?But let?s be very clear, while we?re tuning out and staying home on Election Day, other folks are tuning in,? she warned. ?I know that in the face of all of that money and influence, it can start to feel like ordinary citizens just can?t get a seat at the table. And that can make you feel helpless and hopeless. It can make you feel or think that you?re powerless.?

Obama did not specifically refer to the outside spending groups known as super-PACs, many of which have formed to support Republicans including her husband?s GOP rival Mitt Romney. But Obama?s campaign has warned that such influential groups will be outspending him in the election.

?For the first time in modern American history, the incumbent (that's us) will get outspent in a re-election campaign ? by some estimates as much as 3-to-1,? Deputy Campaign Manager Stephanie Cutter wrote in an email to supporters earlier this week.

?Time and again, history has shown us that there is nothing ? nothing ? more powerful than ordinary citizens coming together for a just cause,? Obama told the AME Church audience. ?And I?m not just talking about the big speeches and protests that we all remember. I?m talking about everything that happens between the marches, when the speeches are over and the cameras were off. ? That is the real work of democracy: what happens during those quiet moments between the marches.?

She added that she knew she was ?preaching to the choir? to a denomination that was founded, in 1816, out of a protest against slavery.

?I'm here today to urge you to continue that work and bring others along with you,? she said. ?Because we know that the only way to be heard above all the noise is to lift our voices up together.?

Endangered Hawaiian birds expand range

Three of Hawaii's rarest birds have been detected at lower elevations along the volcanic summits for the first time in 30 years, a sign the endangered species may be holding their own against introduced diseases and climate change, scientists say.

Avian malaria and pox virus, two introduced mosquito-borne pathogens, limit the habitat of many susceptible Hawaiian birds to areas above the range of mosquitoes. Scientists are concerned warming conditions could allow mosquitoes to expand their range, thus hitting birds even harder and driving more of the endangered birds to extinction.

Scientists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey rediscovered the birds as part of a project looking at the potential impact of climate change on bird diseases.

All of the rediscovered species, which live in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the big island of Hawaii, are thought to be vulnerable to mosquito-transmitted diseases, limiting their distribution to the cooler, higher elevations of the refuge where mosquitoes are less likely to thrive. Observations of the birds show they've significantly expanded their known range.

Scientists don't know what's allowed the birds to survive at lower elevations than expected, although they are currently conducting research to find out.

"Hawaii's native birds face multiple threats from habitat destruction, invasive species, introduced diseases and climate change, with many already having been driven to extinction," said U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt in a statement. "The observation of three endangered species possibly expanding their range in a wildlife refuge gives us hope that with some care, the road to extinction need not be a one-way street."

Marriages and relationships have changed enormously in recent decades in Ireland.

Lots of couples get married nowadays after having children, or after living together for years.

Civil ceremonies also mean that people that have been married in the past can remarry.

A positive change in Irish society was in 2010 when changes in legislation meant that Civil Partnerships ?in Ireland became recognized. Gay couples, whose relationships have not previously been given legal recognition by the State, may now formalise their relationships in the eyes of the law. It gives same-sex couples rights and responsibilities similar to civil marriage.

I am married almost 4 years. Most of it has been good; some of it great and there has been not so great times too.

My husband and I have very different personalities, our interests and hobbies are different, and our outlooks on life are different. What we share is the love we have for each other, the respect, the trust in each other and we know we want to spend the rest of our lives together. But we have to work at our marriage.

Along the (sometimes bumpy) path we have both learned a lot, and continue to do so. Allow me to share:

? Communication is critical in a relationship. Talk. Let each other know what is going on in your heads.
? Do not give each other the silent treatment. What does it achieve? Nothing!
? Make time for yourselves. Pick a night a week and go for a walk together, go to the cinema, get a take away and a DVD.

I am not nagging and my husband is not being nagged!

A friend of mine shared something with me recently. Her husband would always phone her as she was in the changing room of a shop! It was like he knew what she was up too. She would smile as his name flashed on her screen. This lady?s beloved husband passed away last year and every time she is in a changing room now she looks at her mobile and wishes he would ring.

Time is precious, so make the most of it with each other.

Hands-on with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the Google Galaxy Nexus

Here at Google I/O 2012, the search giant handed out Galaxy Nexus smartphones to attendees that were updated with a preview version of the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. We got our hands on one and gave it a quick tour to check out the new features.

There a number of new features in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but the most prominent ones are the improved touch response and performance, offline voice to text transcription, new home screen and widget management, revamped notification bar, and Google Now intelligent search tool.

Performance-wise, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on the Galaxy Nexus appears to be snappy and quick, but that is often the case when a phone is loaded with a clean operating system for the first time. In our experience, once the phone has been in use and loaded with apps and data, it tends to slow down significantly. We will have to see if that happens with Android 4.1, or if Google's under-the-hood improvements are really making a difference in the long run.

Google's new offline voice transcription works as promised and makes the existing feature more usable in more situations. The new home screen and widget management features are well done and add to the already improved experience offered in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Likewise, the new notification bar offers more information than before and the ability to swipe down with two fingers to display even more data if wanted. It is also possible to perform actions, such as reply or comment, on notifications that display in the new status bar.

Google Now is a big new feature that promises to make it easier to carry out day-to-day tasks. Google's goal with Now is to provide information to the user without them asking for it. It does this by combining data from past search history, current location, and upcoming calendar data to inform the user of such things as weather, flight times, transportation information, upcoming events, and more. We didn't get a whole lot of time to play with Google Now just yet, but we look forward to taking a deeper dive into it when we have a final, proper version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to test.

All in all, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is most certainly an incremental improvement over Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the new features and performance enhancements promise to provide a better experience for many users, which is the most important thing of all. Unfortunately, it may be a long time before many Android owners get to benefit from Jelly Bean's improvements, as the vast majority of devices in use today aren't even running Android 4.0 yet. The Jelly Bean update is shipping on the new Google Nexus 7 tablet and will be available for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S smartphones in mid-July. Other than that, we really don't know when it will come to the multitude of Android devices in use today.

Google Nexus Q streaming player unveiled

Google Wednesday introduced what it describes as the "first social streaming device of its kind" with the Nexus Q, which streams your music and entertainment from the cloud to your home, or even to your friends who also have Android phones or tablets.

"It's the first device that lets you create social playlists with your friends," the company said in a video shown on YouTube (shared?below).

The spherical, glowing?Q has the guts of an Android phone and near-field communication to sync with phones nearby. It also has a Micro-USB port. It can?connect to your TV and your stereo system, or run its own speakers with a built-in?amplifier. (Reminds me just a?bit of the orb in Woody Allen's "Sleeper" ??but that was used for something else.)

The Nexus Q will work in concert with Google's app store, now called Google Play, "play it all on the biggest speakers and screen in the house. There are no downloads, no syncing, no running out of space," the company says. Google Play now sells movies and TV episodes (as well as seasons).

The player will cost $299. You can pre-order it now, and it will start shipping in July. Google will also sell a pair of Triad bookshelf speakers for $399 that will work with the Nexus Q.?

After more than three decades on the brink of extinction, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) ? the largest and most threatened wild bird species in the United States ? is making a modest recovery, thanks to intensive captive breeding and medical intervention. But troubling data reported this week suggest that unless hunters change their practices, the condor will require extensive support in perpetuity if it is to survive in the wild.

The cause of the problem is that the condors ingest lead when they feed on the carcasses of animals that hunters have shot. A multidisciplinary study published on 26 June (M. Finkelstein et al. Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA http://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1203141109; 2012) shows that chronic lead poisoning persists among condors, despite a 2008 California ban on the use of lead shot in regions where the birds are being reintroduced.

Building on earlier studies, the researchers collected feathers and blood samples from trapped birds and found no discernible difference in lead levels before and after the ban. Condors feed by scavenging; the results show that many of those sampled have dangerous levels of lead in their bodies. Lead poisoning can severely damage the birds? nervous systems and impair liver and kidney function, among other problems, and it can be fatal. The study also found that approximately 20% of condors in the wild have lead levels that are high enough to require costly treatment with chemical agents to remove the toxic metal from their bodies.

?By any measure, the lead poisoning rates in condors are of epidemic proportions,? says Myra Finkelstein, a toxicologist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, who led the research.

The California condor population fell to an all-time low of 22 individuals in 1982, but captive-breeding and monitoring programmes have brought it back up to nearly 400 birds. Of those, half reside in captive-breeding centres, which provide a steady supply of new releases. In California, only 24 chicks have fledged in the wild. At that rate, the study shows, it would take 1,800 years for the population in California to reach 150 ? the number called for in the recovery plan ? without the ongoing release of birds bred in captivity.

Finkelstein?s team did an isotopic analysis of the lead in the birds and identified lead shot or bullets as the main source of contamination. Even though hunters must use copper bullets or other alternatives in condor habitat, some are apparently ignoring the ban. Condors must consume 75?150 carcasses every year to maintain a healthy weight. The study found that even if fewer than 2% of the carcasses contain lead, there is a 50% chance that a condor will eat contaminated meat (see ?Loaded odds?).

?Kudos to the hunters who are using copper [bullets], but it isn?t going to be effective until you get all the lead out,? says Jeff Miller, conservation advocate for the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD), based in Tucson, Arizona. Lead ammunition is cheaper and popular with hunters. The American Bird Conservancy in The Plains, Virginia, which advocates for lead-free hunting, argues that publicizing the risk of lead shot to human health might persuade hunters to use alternatives.

Pedro Nava, a former member of the California State Assembly who spearheaded the lead ban, says that a lack of resources for enforcing the ban means that the condor?s future depends on the good will of hunters. He says that the California Department of Fish and Game needs more enforcement personnel. ?They have 300 game wardens in the state. If they were to be consistent with other states in terms of population, they should have a thousand,? he says.

But with a little coaching, preparation and effort the capable executive can create a budget that will keep your business on track during the year. Here is how to prepare a master budget and use the data to make strategic business adjustments.

Overview of budgeting

The first known use of the word budget is from the 15^th century. Countries, businesses and households have been doing budgets for a long time. Still the budgeting process remains a mystery of complexity to many people and becomes nothing more than a platform for their desk paperweight. Budgets are a business tool that can power operating results and improve financial durability.

How are budgets used and developed?

Budgets are prepared with a collaborative effort from cross-functional business teams. Gather financial and operating data from the prior year to aid your budgeting process. Budgets are forward looking and prepared for internal use only. Enlist the help of staffers from accounting, marketing, finance, operations, engineering, information technology and other business functions. The budget process can take weeks but the well constructed budget is used by the entire company to stay on track and make strategic business adjustments throughout the year. Begin the budget process well before the beginning of the fiscal year.

The master budget is made of:

• Operating budget: An estimate of unit sales, production and materials requirements for the upcoming period.
• Financial budget: The budgeted income statement is prepared using the production budgets and the operating expenses budget.

The operating budget is made of these sub-budgets:

• Sales budget: An estimate of sales for the upcoming period prepared by the marketing and sales departments
• Production budget: An estimate of unit production to meet the sales budget. Production managers usually build in a reserve for finished product to meet unexpected demand.
• Direct materials budget. An estimate of materials required to meet the production budget. Purchasing managers usually build in a reserve for raw materials to meet unexpected production requirements.
• Manufacturing Overhead (MOH) budget: The estimated indirect variable and fixed manufacturing costs.
• Operating expenses budget: An estimate of the variable and fixed non-manufacturing costs.
