Lara Logan Opens Up About Being Sexually Assaulted in Cairo

CBS News chief foreign correspondent and 60 Minutes reporter Lara Logan finally breaks her silence in a 60 Minutes interview airing this Sunday night, opening up about the prolonged sexual assault she suffered in Tahrir Square in Eqypt two months ago.

On Feb. 11, Logan, her producer Max McClellan, cameraman Richard Butler, a bodyguard and an interpreter were in Cairo's Tahrir Square to cover the celebration following the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, when the joyful celebration of the country's successful revolution suddenly turned terrifying. In the 60 Minutes interview, Logan tells Scott Pelley that her interpreter heard some words in Arabic that made him realize their group was suddenly in a dangerous situation. He advised Logan that they should get out of there, but at that moment Logan was separated from her team and then assaulted by a crazed mob.

"There was no doubt in my mind that I was in the process of dying," Logan says. "I thought not only am I going to die, but it's going to be just a torturous death that's going to go on forever and ever and ever."

Logan's assault has generated a lot of conversation, some of it having to do with the perilous position journalists (especially female ones) find themselves in when reporting in dangerous areas of the world. Logan, however, states that she vows to return to work as soon as she can, revealing that thinking of her two children back home helped her endure the assault -- before she was rescued by the nearby group of Egyptian women and soldiers.

Coming home to her kids, Logan says, "I felt like I had been given a second chance that I didn't deserve... because I did that to them. I came so close to leaving them, to abandoning them." Logan's 60 Minutes interview airs Sunday, May 1, at 7 p.m. ET on CBS.

ESC show features Woz, teardowns, and 25 embedded tracks

ESC show features Woz, teardowns, and 25 embedded tracks
By?Eric Brown

The final agenda has been posted for the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) Silicon Valley 2011, scheduled for May 2-5. This year's event features four keynotes -- including one from Steve Wozniak -- plus 240 exhibitors, a teardown and giveaway of the Nook Color, and a Linux/Android track with sessions on Android sensors, Linux flash file systems, and "Android vs. MeeGo."

Set to kick off in San Jose next week, the 23rd annual ESC embedded technology event will feature three co-located conferences. These include the Multicore Conference and Expo, TI Tech Days, and the EDN Designing with LEDs Workshop.

Held at McEnery Convention Center, ESC Silicon Valley 2011 will feature 25 conference tracks, as well as an exhibition floor with exhibits from 240 companies. According to the organizers, there will be more than 70 free sponsored sessions, as well as free hands-on lab training. The latter includes a Freescale session covering development on its Cortex-A8-based i.MX53 processor.

The conference will also play host to a free exhibit hall party, as well as four awards ceremonies: EDN Innovation Awards, EE Times ACE Awards, Test & Measurement World "Best in Test" Awards, and the Embeddy Awards. To put it all in perspective, attendees will be able to gaze upon "Samson", the 66-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton, who will no doubt give dozens of presenters fodder for their opening jokes.?

Keynote addresses will be offered by Apple co-founder and Fusion-io chief scientist Steve Wozniak (pictured). Woz will be giving a "Fireside Chat" on, well, just about whatever he wants to. Also on Tuesday morning, a keynote will be delivered by Green Hills CEO Dan O'Dowd, speaking on an unknown topic. (Perhaps, he will tell us if he still believes Linux is doomed.)

Wednesday's keynote belongs to Meg Selfe, Vice President, IBM Rational Software -- Complex & Embedded Systems. Jeri Ellsworth, the developer of the Commodore 64 Direct to TV? back in the '80s, will close out the conference with a keynote on Thursday.?

This year, ESC will offer three teardowns in its ESC theater events. The teardowns include a RIM BlackBerry Playbook tablet, a Kidde i9010 10-year Ion Smoke Detector and Alarm, and Barnes & Noble's Nook Color (pictured).

This year, the Nook Color e-reader has been chosen as the event's free giveaway, which will occur at the end of the session. ESC theater events also include a variety of panel discussions and study presentations, as well as an Android speed training session.

The 25 conference tracks include HMI, security, embedded memory, debugging, safety design, and wireless networking. A "Linux/Android/Open Source" track is said to include the following sessions:

  • Android jumpstart -- William Gatliff (freelance) -- implementing Android beyond smartphones
  • Embedded application development for open source UEFI firmware -- Daryl McDaniel (Intel) -- open source Efi Development Kit (EDK) for developing UEFI applications explored
  • Android vs. MeeGo: which is better for the x86? -- Michael Anderson (PTR Group) -- pros and cons of Android and MeeGo on Intel Atom platform
  • Choosing a Linux flash file system -- Wanmo Wong (Micron) -- evaluating the more than 10 flash file systems available in Linux
  • More embedded Linux jumpstart -- William Gatliff -- kernel modules, licensing issues, debugging, real-time capabilities, embedded-related APIs, and firmware update techniques explained
  • Using and leveraging Android's sensors -- Jim Steele (Sensor Platforms) -- getting the most out of sensors with the Android NDK and APIs

Friday Box Office: Universal's 'Fast Five' Racing Toward $80 Million Weekend

Jaimie Trueblood/Universal Pictures

"Fast Five"

Universal?s Fast Five is racing towards a $79 million to $81 million weekend opening after earning an estimated $33 million or $34 million on Friday ? the biggest showing of the year by far.

If Universal insiders are correct about the numbers, Fast Five will easily eclipse the $70.5 million earned by Fast & Furious during its opening weekend.

Directed by Justin Lin, Fast Five is a much-needed win for Universal, and has already grossed $43.7 million at the international box office, where it began rolling out last weekend. The pic reunites franchise stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson. Joining the series is Dwayne Johnson.

Universal has a lot riding on the event pic, set this time in Rio de Janeiro. The studio says Fast Five cost $125 million after production incentives and tax credits, but others put the price tag as high as $150 million.

The box office glow enjoyed by Fast Five didn?t extend to the other new films, including tween-driven Prom, the first film greenlit by Disney chair Rich Ross. Prom struggled to gross even $2 million on Friday, meaning it could only open to $6 million, a disappointment for Ross. Financially, Disney isn?t that exposed, having spent only $8 million to produce pic.

Directed by Joe Nussbaum, Prom?s cast includes Aimee Teegarden, Nicholas Braun, Danielle Campbell, Cameron Monaghan and Christine Elise McCarthy.

The Weinstein Co.?s 3D toon Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil also struggled, grossing roughly $1.2 million to $1.3 million on Friday.

Hoodwinked Too! is a co-production with Maurice Kanbar?s Kanbar Entertainment (Kanbar created SKYY Vodka). Insiders say Kanbar put up much of the financing for the $30 million film.

Among holdovers, 20th Century Fox?s 3D toon Rio is expected to finish the weekend at No. 2, followed by Lionsgate?s Tyler Perry?s Madea?s Big Happy Family and Fox 2000?s Water for Elephants. All three films saw bigger than usual drops on Friday, since so many kids were out of school a week ago.
