Demi Lovato Quits 'Sonny With a Chance'

Demi Lovato Quits 'Sonny With a Chance'

Demi Lovato will not be returning to Disney Channel's Sonny with a Chance, the singer-actress tells People. Instead, she's going to concentrate on her health and her music career -- hopefully in that order.

"I don't think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery," says Lovato, who underwent three months of residential medical treatment for "physical and emotional issues" this winter. She said performing in front of a camera "would make me nervous."

"It's kind of sad for me... but there couldn't be a better time for me to move on," the 18-year-old starlet told People. Demi is still signed to one of Disney's music labels.

While it's unclear where Demi goes from here (leaving a TV show still in production is relatively new territory for Disney stars), the show must go on -- though not without a few big changes. Disney is relaunching Sonny this June as a sketch comedy show called So Random! (which is the fictional sketch comedy show Sonny joined in the original version). Confused? Ask your kids.

How brightly will Demi's star shine without a hit show to keep it polished? Time -- and Demi's fans -- will tell. But there are more important things in the world than celebrity status. Survival, for one.

Not all talented kids can become entertainment machines. But that's not the message one gets watching Demi and fellow young stars Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Miranda Cosgrove, etc. with multihyphenate careers that include work in music, TV and movies. So it's a relief to see at least one of these kids taking her foot off the celebrity accelerator, and simply taking care of herself.
